This is such a wonderful piece and a sweet tribute to your father. Yes, mom and dad cut my hair, too, but not with kitchen scissors, as I recall. Do you think the Scotch tape use for haircuts was more a thing in 3M country?

Good point and it might have been. I actually had a bunch of family members who worked for 3M over the years, some temporarily and others as a career, so maybe that fed into the popularity of it in MN. When I have a minute, I'll look thru some newspapers outside Middle America and see if that same ad appeared. Thanks for the thought.

From cutting wood to (maybe) fish to bangs! I have a few of those photos with wonky bangs too. A glance at my elementary school class photos shows that this happened to a lot of us, lol!

What a delightful read and so well tied together. I remember kitchen table haircuts too… but mine were while I sat in my chair on top of the Sears and Robuck catalog. Thanks for stirring up that memory.

Oh yes! That’s a forgotten detail, too!

Oh this did make me smile so much Lori, we’ve all been there, a pudding basin design over here, I had some awful haircuts as a kid. I might post a pic of one of my awful haircuts on my Monday note now 😂

Awesome! 😎

Oh my, Lori, this is brilliant. I got lost just looking for those goofy photos. You bet I had my bangs cut that way. What a memory.

I feel like my goal in these stories is to do exactly that — spark everyday memories and the stories they tell.

It is ridiculous how many photos I have that are even worse than the one I included 🤦🏼‍♀️

Lol... most of our childhood photos were on slides. Only a fraction have been scanned and oh look, I can't include photos in replies to comments.

I’ve had a bunch of our family slides scanned but have a bunch yet to do. But man there are some winners in there 😉

The Scotch tape advertisement is a wonderful addition to this piece about shears -- mom's hair-cutting scissors and dad's kitchen shears. The photograph of your bangs made me laugh in recognition of my own experiences as a kid.

I think homemade haircuts is something so many of us have memories and photographic proof of from our childhoods! re: the advertisement, I seriously always assumed my parents came up with the idea of using Scotch tape when curling my hair, so was surprised when I came across the ad while looking through old newspapers. Thanks!

remember Dippity Do? The pink curling gel you put on while your hair was wet and then rolled up on curlers you had to sleep on overnight. The plastic curlers were pink, too.

Dippity Doo! Yes I absolutely do remember Mom using that on my hair, and those awful pink sponge curlers that dig into my head all night - yikes! Thanks for *those* memories :)

When I was doing the research for this piece, I came across ads for Scotch Hair Tape, which was also pink and had zigzag edges. I don't remember every using or even seeing it, but women apparently finger curled their hair and then put this tape on to set the curls lol I wish I could add a photo because they're hilarious!

oh yes, the pink tape that looked like it had been cut with pinking shears! I remember that 3M product.
