Love the recipes -- and the medical advice! Who knew -- banana splints!

Oh, I remember all of that. We enjoyed the same freedom in summer, didn't go back to school until after Labor Day, jumped on our bikes in the morning and rode them down to the beach, about a mile away, grabbed a shaved ice, etc., We didn't have to go home until 6 pm. We also went to the mall, and my mom bought my sisters and me an Orange Julius. Life was so much simpler then :)

Those are such core memories and really influenced how I saw the world. Great childhoods, for sure.

Yes! As a kid, summer was another word for freedom…All you’re missing is a pitcher of Tang!

I’m holding off on my Tang story for when it gets a little colder 😉 I don’t know about you, but in my house, Tang meant “Hot Russian Tea” ☕️

Yes, Kool-Aid was the best, and cherry was my favorite. We also had that Popsicle maker! Love your chocolate-covered banana story! My favorite memory was after my siblings grew up and out of the house, on some warm evenings, Mom, Dad, and I would walk down to Woods Drugs. In their refrigerated chest, they had several different ice cream treats. I always picked the Drumstick! We'd get our treats and walk back home. Oh my! I hadn't thought about that in years! Thanks Lori!

Wonderful Kool-Aid memories!

I also made “Orange Julius at home, but never with egg, just FCOJ, sugar, milk, and ice. But then I learned how to make the same thing with fresh strawberries and I never looked back at the OJ again!

That photo tells so many stories! There were seven of us, and only six in the set! We had a Dairy queen a block away and Mom would send one or two of us to get vanilla cones - the dime size. We all wanted to go because the best part was licking the cones on the way back so they didn't drip all over our hands! Someone had to take one for the team! Thanks for the memory Lori!

That vintage Tupperware set for making ice-pops with Kool-Aid brought me right back to the kitchen of my childhood. The freezer had two metal ice-cube trays. Sweet memories of summer.

Oh yes. The metal ice cube trays! Wasn’t there an awkward mechanism you pulled to release the cubes? Thanks, Jill!

Yes, a lever which seemed impossible at times to pull hard enough to crack the ice cubes free. They came with every new refrigerator. I wonder if they froze faster in metal.

Growing up during Soviet occupation in Estonia, the stores were rather empty. Buying an ice-cream was a rate special treat. Summer tastes were wild strawberries and blueberries. While ice-cream choices nowadays can make one dizzy, the best summer treat is still the first fresh wild strawberry that you pick yourself. 🙂

A wonderful trip down summer memory lane, Lori! I’m sure there were Kool-Aid pops at my house. I know there were the twin popsicles you broke in the middle. I remember using those sticks as splints for a sprained finger. Summertime was pure fun in my neighborhood. There were SO many kids of all ages. Mostly we played outside from dawn til night—kickball, softball, tree-climbing, lizard-stalking, “cat-walking” (on fences), backyard pools—it was a blast.

Sounds like quite an idyllic childhood! We had that Tupperware set as well ... orange juice usually went in ours. My mother had originally got them but, if I remember correctly I still had them when my children were little. I am not sure what happened to them since.

I can taste the Kool-Aid. Thanks for the memory!

My mom was very health minded and economical so we didn't get any store bought frozen sweets. She would freeze orange juice and grape juice in those Tupperware molds.

Those molds were ubiquitous, weren’t they 😉 Mom wasn’t health conscious as much as frugal when it came to treats, especially since our house was often filled with neighborhood kids and friends.
