What a beautiful story! Too many family stories and recipes, and even memories have been lost, and I'm glad your lovely reverse-Gift-of-the-Magi tale has not.
So many family stories continue because of our lack of curiosity when those who could tell the WHOLE story have left us. As I age, I realize each grandchild had a different experience with the oldest generation and we all have stories. As I now am the elder, I regret my lack of documentation of the stories I’ve heard. The story is so important to bring life to those who have preceded us. Thanks for your writings.
Very sweet (pun intended)

Mary, that’s the beauty of family history - it’s never too late to tell our stories, but also our stories about the stories of our ancestors.
Great blend of family and food history, Lori!
Just a delicious story to tell every Thanksgiving here on
My family’s favorite food when I was growing up was collard greens, cornbread, and fried chicken.
