Those Brachs Neapolitan Coconut candies take me back to my childhood. My mom was a hall-of-fame candy stasher. My grandmother’s purse kept her from blowing away in a stiff breeze.

What a perfect distillation of the social history of a class of purses in America. I do remember seeing those little basket types with the latch at the top. Sigh.

Thanks! I hadn’t thought of that aspect, but Grandma’s purses would definitely give a history lesson lol. I especially love the one in the photo. She’d gotten it on a trip to Florida, and bought matching earrings, which I have in my collection haha. They’re made of straw and covered with plastic fruit lol

Love this trip down childhood candy memory lane. My grandma had those Neapolitan candies too. A candy dish full of them was always on the coffee table. Because it isn't a name I see often, I'll add that a Wegner family lived three houses down from me when I was growing up; I was friends with both of their daughters. The parents had emigrated from Germany, probably sometime in the late 50s.

The only two items I remember that are associated with particular people are the Kit Kats (chocolate bars) that Auntie Nora (Dad's cousin) brought us every Saturday morning when she visited and the Mars bar I bought with the 6d I was given every week on the one day I had to walk from school to Nana's house (my maternal grandmother). At Easter my brother and I got chocolate eggs from lots of people (family and friends) ... We got so many we were required to pace ourselves and eat some each day until they were gone. Mum had a trolley. My eggs covered one layer and my brothers the other.

Ah Easter candy! And Halloween, too. I remember sitting on my bedroom floor late into the night organizing all my holiday candy - my favorites, things that would last the longest, things to trade with my sister, things I didn't like and would give to Dad lol - and then rationing it out to make it last!

Thanks, @Jane, for sharing your candy memories and sparking some of my own!

Gold Mine Nugget Bubble Gum!!!! I am so glad you added the photo, because I would not have remembered them, but of course remember the little yellow nuggets in the little canvas bag. Wow you took me back. My grandma also had candy (not in her bag, but in a decorative candy jar in her living room. Grandmas are good like that. These were striped hard candies--the stripes were slightly wavy and the colors almost opalescent. I thought they were beautiful.

As a Nana, I have carried on Grandma’s traditions in many ways, including keeping candy in my much-smaller purses! And yes, candy jars, only my grandma’s were usually filled with M&Ms.

Thanks so much @Lisa, for sharing your memories! So sweet!

May I add that your grandmother had great style. The dress and the bag in the photo are fantastic. If I were her stylist I would suggest bigger, square sunglasses, but I don't think sunglasses like that were available then.

She definitely was a fashionista and clothes horse lol She made all her own clothes and seriously had matching shoes, purses , jewelry and often gloves and sunglasses to match. lol

Someday I’m going to share the story of Grandma and her “persuader” which was her secret weapon against butt dimples 🤣

I need to know about this.
