Hi, I’m Lori
And I’m so happy to welcome you to my little newsletter about stories at the intersection of family and culinary history.
Having been born into the ancestral trifecta of emotional reservation — a German Lutheran family from Minnesota — writing became my outlet at a very young age, and one I have spent a lifetime employing for that use, as well as “hat money”, as my grandma would often say. (Grandma was a big fan of hats, and believed them to be right up there with good cast iron skillets as a necessary item on any budget. She wasn’t wrong.)
Stories about family and food have been filling my head for as long as I can remember. I think it’s time I let them out.
Culinary History is Family History
It’s the name of this newsletter, but it’s also something I know to be true. The foods we eat, the meals we prepare and the ways we prepare them are intimately connected to who we are as individuals, families and communities.
And these connections are home to some of the best stories.
What to expect
Each edition of Culinary History is Family History will feature a story about my family and the foods we eat, a recipe or two, and some writing prompts to get you started thinking, talking and eventually writing about that sweet spot that exists between family history and culinary history in your own life and family.
By clicking the subscribe button, you’ll get every newsletter in your inbox, and by downloading the Substack app, those same newsletters can be read on an ad-free space that’s filled with some of the most creative, engaging and talented writers on the planet.
Whether you’re a genealogist or family historian, a fan of old recipes or food traditions, or just someone who wants to learn more about the connections between family history and food, there will be something here for you. It might be in one of the stories shared, but you might also find it in the community we’re building.
And that’s the hope.
Because, we all have stories that connect the foods we love to the people we are, and every story is better when shared.
What better place to do that than here!
